Vegetable garden space saver: climbing beans up corn stems.

This summer we grew climbing beans under our corn and the climbing beans used the corn to climb on. It was so much easier than having to put in a climbing rack for the climbing beans and makes the climbing beans really easy to see and pick.

It left less plant spread cluttering around the base of the corn and bean stems and therefore made hand weeding and adding mulch easier too. We always hand weed as we don’t want weeds to seed and blow out into our indigenous bush right beside our vegie patch and we grow organic – so no herbicide.

The beans are also nitrogen fixers so deliver nitrogen (nutrient) straight to the roots of the corn which  are very hungry.

This is great. But can you tell me when to plant which. Eg: Do you plants the seeds at the same time? Or wait until the corn is so high before planting the beans?

Definitely plant the corn first and get it going it has a longer growing time than beans by 30 – 40 days. You need some height as the beans grow quite quickly. So plant the beans at least a month or so after the corn for best results. You can also leave the corn stems in the ground after taking off the corn if your beans are still going to keep the structure in place. You can also try peas / snow peas too.
Our corn is growing inside in toilet paper rolls on the heat bed now to get them ready for planting out into the vegie patch soon – the weather is warming up.
    Enjoy your beans and corn.
