Popping Corn – grow, harvest, store and cook.
We recently picked our first batch of popping corn. Variety: Sweet Corn Baby – POP F1. It was so easy to grow and we have found that harvesting and preparing it is so easy so an all round winner in the vegie patch.
Once we saw that the kernels were quite dark and well formed we pulled the cobs off the plant, removed the husk and let the cobs dry out on a plate. It took about 3 weeks until the kernels became really hard. The kernels then just popped off really easily using fingers and we immediately threw them in some hot oil to get our first ever pop corn.
The great thing is that once the kernels are hard and dry the whole crop can easily be stored in a reusable container for eating over the coming year. No further processing is needed to store this crop for the long term without degrading. The most important thing is that they are really dry when stored to avoid mould. We can recommend throwing in some of those silica gel satchels (they often come in food packets, are non-edible but help remove moisture).
We can now enjoy pop corn on winter nights while watching a movie at home.

Hot air popcorn is my favourite so the thought of growing it ourselves is awesome! Can’t wait to try it!
