Ripen Green Tomatoes To Red Tomatoes
Yes the seasons have turned and with the cooling of the weather our influx of red tomatoes has slowed down. We are at the point of needing space to start sowing and planting out our winter vegetables so some of the tomato plants must go, but they still have loads of green tomatoes on them – what a dilemma!?!?
We have overcome this issue by removing some of the plants and hanging them in a dry area. Once the plants have been pulled out they stop trying to flower, which is a complete waste of time and energy so late in the season. All the energy still left in the plant as it now slowly dies will go into ripening the last remaining green fruits and turning them red for harvesting.
We also have a few green tomatoes that we leave sitting on our kitchen window sill and mostly these slowly turn red also.

I’ve never heard of this method before – but it makes sense as I always see vine-on tomatoes in the store all the time and they are touted as being naturally ripened.
The tomatoes on our hanging vines are still ripening and coming in… 2 weeks on.
