Seed Saving – Vegetables
Seed saving from your fruit and vegetables has so many great outcomes. Yes letting vegetables go to seed in your garden does take a little more time and effort and also uses a bit more space in your vegie garden, but there are many really great outcomes.
- You know that the seeds you are using have not been treated with any chemicals like fungicides, as many branded seed packet varieties are.
- You can help keep heirloom vegetable varieties from extinction.
- You can continue non genetically modified seed production.
- It saves you money in buying more seed.
- You can share with friends and neighbours.
- You save on packaging if you were buying seed, seedlings or potted plants.
- You save on transport fuel either your own or the company you buy them off.
- It “closes the loop” on your sustainable food journey.
Just be organised and have an area where you can set aside the seeds while they are drying, plates on a shelf or rack work well. Also have an organised system for storing your seeds, and label them well. We just use packets (like seed packets you buy) and an old shoe box.
If you do need to buy seed buy from a reputable company that does not treat seeds with chemicals like fungicides (organic) and stocks seed varieties of heirloom vegetables. Supporting old “heirloom” varieties will help stop them from going extinct and who knows what genetics of vegetables we are going to need to get us through rapid climate change and adaptation.
