Solstice Garlic Harvest With A Twist

Posted in Growing Our Own Food, Preserving Food on Dec 30, 2009

With the longest day, summer solstice falling just before Christmas in Australia we decided that our organic garlic harvest could make the perfect Christmas presents for friends and family. We actually boycotted buying Christmas presents years ago – the idea of buying things for people in a hurry and that they probably just didn’t want was too stressful for us personally and for the environment too.

Here is a moment after the summer solstice harvest when we have plaited the organic garlic up to make them more interesting as Christmas presents - you can also plait in some colorful ribbon or something if you want to make them more Christmassy.

Here are the reasons why we chose organic garlic to be a good Christmas present:

  • They are easy to grow
  • You plant on the winter solstice and harvest on the summer solstice - good earth karma
  • They are generally pricey if shop bought - especially organic garlic
  • We have put 6 months of love and nuturing into our Christmas presents
  • They are good for your health
  • They last and don’t need to be refrigerated (especially on Christmas day if you have to travel with them)
